An
AMT Ford F-series 1978-1979 Pickup
truck kit
This
is built from the Model King reissue of the AMT kit.
I
opened up the grille with a dremel tool and hobby knife.
I changed the engine to a Boss 429 (out of a Polar Lights
Mercury Cyclone Nascar kit).
I
made rear torque bars for the axle. (I don't want that big
429 to break anything back there).
The
tires and wheels are stock with the kit. The kit has the
parts to be built either as a 2WD or 4WD truck. The tarp
is included with the kit, as well as a roll bar and a push
bar for the bumper.
Overall
for it's age, this is a pretty good kit. There are some
details left out (no inside rear view mirror or brake master
cylinder) but these are minor and easily corrected with
pieces from a modeler's parts box.
The
model itself has square headlights. The early 78s had round
headlights (as my own 78 F150 did), but were converted a
few months into the year to square (hologen) headlights,
and then stayed square right through 1979. So you could
technically make either year with this kit.
The
truck model has a Dana 60 rear end, so it would be an F250
/ F350 truck. Although the wheels don't accurately have
floating axles in the rear (or 4WD hubs for the front).
