Messerschmitt Me262 German Jet aircraft and rocket models.
The Messerschmitt Me262 was one of the first production jet fighters in the world (although secretly the USA and Britain both worked on similar projects during the war).
The project had begun at Messerschmitt as early as April 1939 for a new high-speed fighter plane, using a propulsion of which was to consist of a “turbine jet” system.
Around 1942 the Me262 took off on his first flight.
The Me262 was powered by two Jumbo 004B type engines giving the Me262 a maximum speed of around 870km at an altitude of 6000m.
Its service ceiling was11400m and its range was 1050km.
Basic armament consists of 4x30 mm MK108 cannon installed in the nose. In addition, 2x12 type R4M rockets could be carried the wings.
While the Me262 has become the popular choice for Germany's jet aircraft in historical references, the Heinkel 162 Salamander jet was actually produced in slightly greater numbers, and probably saw more actual air time.
The Heinkel 162 was developed near the end of the conflict (1944) and not all of them were completed before the wars end.
Only about 500 ME262s are believed to have been made, but both that aircraft and the Hienkel 162s were in various stages or manufacturer when the Allies reached the factories.
Many had not been fully assembled and with the reliablility issues with early jet engines, they probably spent more time on the ground being repaired than actually flying missions.
The B1 suffix usually meant a ME262 was a two seater aircraft, which was slighly longer than the single seater. |
