F14 Tomcat aircraft models.
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft.
The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program following the discontinued F-111B.
The F-14 was the first of the American fighters which were designed using past experience of air combat against MiG fighters during the Vietnam War.
The F-14A first flew on around December 1970.
As a U. S. Navy fighter it fulfilled the dual roles of long range interceptor and air superiority fighter, and was later used as a bomber.
Deployed from 1974 to 2006, it successfully employed a "swing wing", which offered a variable sweep design, which was useful for both hypersonic speeds as well as low speed combat situations.
The F-14A, which covers most of the early variants, was the most produced variant of the F14 Tomcat aircraft.
The F-14D Tomcat is an updated version of the aircraft that served until the Tomcat was withdrawn from Navy service in 2006.
It features an improved engine - the General Electric F110.
The F-14D Tomcat became a multi-role aircraft and included digital updates to radar and fire control systems.
Some of the F-14Ds were newly-constructed, while some were conversions from the F-14A models.
EThe f14s are quipped with a 20mm M61 vulcan rotation cannon, and a variety of weapon systems, including the AIM-9 sidewinder, AIM-7 sparrow and the radar controlled long-distance missile the AIM-54 Phoenix. |
