- Ultra-Lounge:
Tiki Sampler - A great compilation of music that transports
you back to a time when tiki bars and cocktail parties were
all the rage. The CD has a good variety of music - from tiki-ish,
to space age, to downright wacky. The packaging couldn't be
any better!
- Don
James: Prewar Surfing Photographs - A strong sense of nostalgia
and a yearning for a simpler life are the accompaniments to
the images in Don James's Pre-War Surfing Photographs. At the
end of the Depression and before the beginning of WWII, James
and a small group of friends lived a charmed life in Southern
California. When school was out, they roamed the undeveloped
Eden-like coast from Malibu to San Onofre, scraping together
gas money for their worn jalopies, lugging 90-pound wooden boards
to the ocean, sleeping in lifeguard huts and makeshift tent
camps in the sand. They lived hand-to-mouth, plucking an endless
supply of abalone and lobster from the ocean and raiding nearby
orange and avocado orchards at night. What spending money they
had came from guiding rumrunners to secluded coves, selling
fresh fish to local restaurants, life guarding in posh beach
clubs in Santa Monica, or acting as stuntmen and extras for
Hollywood films. At that time, there were fewer than 200 surfers
in the entire state, and James and his friends were inventing
a beach/surf culture that would endure for decades.

- Beach
bum Berry's Taboo Table - Forbidden secrets of feast-worthy
food! A companion book to The Grog Log and Intoxica!, Taboo
Table features Polynesian food recipes and party recipes. Drink-lovers
take heart, punches and other exotic drinks also have a welcome
place on the Taboo Table!
- Book
Of Tiki - This is the best book on the post-war Tiki culture,
although there really isn't much competition. The book's strength
is its glut of color photos, which chronicle everything from
restaurant and resort architecture to barware, film, and graphic
design. The text (on the history - mostly the 1940s through
the early 1960s - of Tiki culture and notable Tiki people and
places, such as Trader Vic's) is good, although scattered about
the book in a busy layout.
- Great
American Woodies Nantucket Surf White Footrest - The Nantucket
Collection is no ordinary furniture. Nantucket is made from
Alder wood - a tight-grained hardwood used in fine furniture
and noted for its paintability. Nantucket features a clean,
classic design with expansion-dowel construction and hidden
barrel bolts. Each piece is finished with two coats of a flexible
water-based enamel, and washes clean with soap and water. Nantucket
- perfect in any setting - indoors or out.
- Hula
Dancers & Tiki Gods - Look here for images of grass-skirted
hula girls (some more naughty than nice) and, in the last 15
pages or so, those stylized idols known as Tiki gods. The text
throughout is breezy and perhaps a little flippant, and, characteristically,
most of the objects shown are on the kitschy side. Nonetheless,
there is no discounting their popularity. Items shown include
everything from postcards, matchbooks, and album covers to furniture,
lamps, mugs, jewelry, and tattoos.
- Hula
Girls and Surfer Boys - Hula and surfing represent the quintessential
Hawaiian experience. Over 270 original photographs and postcard
images are presented chronologically from 1870 to 1940 to powerfully
portray the evolving styles and popularity of these icons of
Hawaii`i. The Hula and surfing traditions both are deeply rooted
in legend and myth and Hula dancing was actually outlawed for
over 60 years. Surfboards were highly prized by the ancients
and the sport became reserved for Hawaii's kings. These enchanting
images include famous personalities like Duke Kahanamoku, as
well as unknown practitioners of their arts.
- Night
of the Tiki: The Art of Shag, Schmaltz, and Selected Primitive
Oceanic Carvings - A good read and a great look! Wonderful
photos of the "real" tiki is as well as contemporary
re-incarnations in sculpture of Schmaltz and popular paintings
by Shag. In a refreshingly non-academic style, the short readable
essays offer lots of facts about the lovable, fascinating tiki
icon past and present.
- Surfs
Up: Collecting the Long board Era - This is the first book
to combine a detailed history of surfing, surfboards, and related
collectible items with an accurate price guide. It gives a complete
overview of sport surfing from its ancient beginnings in Polynesia
and Hawaii until 1969, the end of the long board era. Included
are several innovative features, such as a grading guide for
surfboards, Duke Kahanamokus hand prints, and collectible surfing
books with their current valuations. The items pictured are
from many of the best private collections worldwide, and represent
the enormous range of popular surfing memorabilia. The great
icons of the sport all put in appearances to make this the book
that all surf fans will covet.
- Surfing
San Onofre to Point Dume: 1936-1942 - There's a lot more
to this collection than just surfing pics - in fact, they're
in the minority. This book is a beautiful photograph record
of a time and place lost forever in the shifting sands of time.
It would be appreciated by anyone who enjoys the history of
California, beaches, surfing, photography, pre-WWII culture
and nature.
