PBY:
The Catalina Flying Boat - The greatest of all flying
boats, the PBY Catalina, was one of the most versatile aircraft
ever built. This definitive study, first published in 1985,
pulls together in a single volume all of the aircraft's fascinating
facts. The author carefully analyzes the PBY's dual use in
the war as a plane of mercy and as a bomber, and he chronicles
the flying boat's contributions in peacetime.
US
Navy PBY Catalina Units of the Pacific War - Although
designed in the mid-1930s and in squadron service several
years prior to the Pearl Harbor attack, the PBY Catalina proved
its soundness in combat throughout the four years that the
World War 2 raged across the Pacific. Deadly in its primary
role as a submarine hunter, the PBY was the scourge of the
Imperial Japanese Navy's submarine force. Its amphibious traits
also made the aircraft well suited to air-sea rescue, and
thousands of Allied airmen were saved from a watery grave
by PBY crews. Using personal interviews, war diaries and combat
reports combined with original Japanese records and books,
Louis B Dorny provides a view on the role of the Catalina
from both sides of the war. Illustrated with over 80 photographs
and color profiles detailing aircraft markings, this is the
definitive history of and insight into the PBY's use by the
US Navy and Allied forces in the Pacific during World War
2.
Consolidated
PBY-5A Catalina - Walk Around No. 60 - The Consolidated
PBY is the most readily recognized and widely produced flying
boat design ever made. The aircraft, which came to be known
as the Catalina, has it origins in Consolidated's 1932 Model
28. The US Navy began taking deliveries of the PBY-5A in October
1941 and then placed orders for over 600 more following Pearl
Harbor. During WWII, PBYs conducted anti-submarine warfare,
patrol bombing, convoy escort, search-and-rescue operations,
and cargo transport. Some PBY-5As went to the US Army and
others to US Allies - Australia, Britain, Canada and the Free
French forces. This book presents a comprehensive view of
the Catalina with 170 photographs, color profiles and detailed
line drawings.
The
Seaplane Years - Tim
Mason s latest book on experimental aircraft and flight testing
describes the development and testing of the most evocative
of aircraft types, those capable of landing and taking off
from water. Beginning with the establishment of the experimental
flying boat station at Felixstowe, the author explains the
development of aircraft testing in two different environments
and examines in detail those maritime aircraft which did much
to establish British naval airpower and develop long-range
links with the outposts of the Empire. Amongst many unfamiliar
and strange aircraft are the Parnall Peto, intended for use
on submarines, the Saro Lerwick which turned out to be such
a military failure and a bizarre scheme for Sunderland flying
boats to carry midget submarines. Coupled with details of
those seaplanes which did much to counter the U-boat menace
in World War II, more than 300 mostly previously unpublished
photos, artworks, and tables, there is much for even the most
demanding aviation enthusiast to savor.
