Modeler's Guide to Realistic Painting & Finishing

Quick Board Paint Stand

This is an inexpensive portable paint stand, for painting small and medium size parts.

I usually always paint my models outside in sunlight, though you could use this at night in an open area, such as an open garage or porch with good lighting.

It is simply a piece of wood, where I have used masking tape to hold the small parts down that are all going to be the same color on the model.

When I build a model, I tend to paint all the spray paint parts first, during daylight, to let them dry. This allows me to assemble the model at night or when I have time, without waiting for daylight or waiting for paint to dry. This also speeds up my building, since I don't always have time, or I have very little.

I use the board over and over, though this is a new one so you can see what I have done. You don't have to hold the board with your hand, you can also lay it down on something, such as an old box.

The important thing is to use masking tape, and this allows you to paint multiple parts at one time.

Another quick way to get a part painted is to leave it on the tree, and paint the whole tree at one time (you can cut off the parts that would not be the color you needs).

Here I have used a pair of clasping large tweezers (which stay closed, and open when you squeeze it).

I quick pass or two and some black parts are done and ready to dry.

  • Remembering Revell Model Kits - This book takes a look at the history of Revell in its heyday of the 1950s to the 1970s. The book looks at the development of everything from the kit itself to the artists who drew the box tops.
  • Rat Fink Big Daddy Roth Book - His hand-built creations and revolutionary techniques transformed car design, reinvented American hot rod culture and put Detroit on notice. Each of his creations transcended function and form to turn the American automobile into rolling sculpture. He fathered a movement known as Lowbrow Art, and his sculpture, design, and illustration inspired underground cartoonists and tattoo artists.
  • Retrofuturism : The Car Designs of J Mays - This first book on Mays's work tracks his meteoric career from his start at Volkswagen-Audi to his current tenure at Ford, where he designs for eight lines (Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Mazda, Volvo, Land Rover, Jaguar, and Aston Martin). Illustrated with more than eighty-five photographs, freehand sketches, and computer renderings, Retrofuturism reveals new ways of thinking about design that have the potential to greatly change the way we live in the twenty-first century.
  • Rod Powell's Flame Painting Techniques - The book shows the proper techniques in laying out the patterns and masking the design. His use of 1/4" masking tape for the design is the best way to go. Excellent book for the beginner or professional custom spray painter. The book is filled with color photographs of the various flame painting techniques and styles. The book also includes three step by step tutorials, with +/- 20 photos per tutorial on flaming cars and motorcycles. This book is definitely good value for money and I'll recommend it any day to any spray painting enthusiast.
