Wire Hanger Paint Stand

Click here to go back to Model Tips main page.

This is an inexpensive paint stand, for painting bodies.

It is simply a wire coat hanger folded over, with a bit of "spring" in it. This allows it to "snap" inside the body and let you move and turn it around while painting. This allows you to see all around the model to see how the paint is setting.

If you think you might need to turn it over to paint the inside (I do this on most of my bodies, because I prefer to paint every part on a model kit) you can use a piece of masking tape to hold the body to the hanger, just to be sure it does not fall off. Being able to turn a body upside down also allows you to simply put the hanger on a hook and let the body dry. (what I do).

Typically when I paint a body, I will tape on any rear or front fascias (using tape inside the body) and do the same with the hood.

This allows the paint to be even and consistent over the entire model, and look better when assembled later.

I left the body parts off here so you can see the hanger.

I usually always paint my models outside in sunlight.

Model Kits

  • Pinstriping Masters: Techniques, Tricks, and Special F/X for Laying Down the Line - Learn some exceptional pin striping tricks and special effects from author Craig Fraser and 20 of the top American and international pinstripers. This one-of-a-kind collection features numerous how-to projects from Bob Bond, Ron Beam, Von Franco and Jimmy C., Blaster, Mokoto, and others. Every project includes step-by-step instructions and sequential color photographs of each step for easy re-creation of the techniques demonstrated.
  • Custom Cars of the 1950s - This is a great book that really captures the custom car scene of The Fifties. Andy was there and knew all these people and even worked on many of these cars. He was once an editor of Rod and Custom Magazine and a long time contributor the the rod mags of the period. The photography is great with clear crisp pictures that are well chosen to show how it was back then when a guy built a car and drove it, although there are photos of some of the early shows and the great show cars of the time. These are not your usual studio photographs, but actual pictures taken at the time these cars were on the street. The cars are shown in the body shop, on the street, at the service station etc.
  • Automotive Atrocities!: The Cars We Love to Hate - Indeed, just about every car in this book is one we love to hate but most of them are, also, cars we all have joked about and the others are just pathetic or weird. I mean...who can keep a straight face while reading about Yugos, Renault Fuegos, Daihatsu Charades, Ford Mustang II King Cobras or AMC Pacers. Then there are (pathetic) Camaros with four-cylinder engines and (weird) Zil limousines.
