A WW2 Hellcat
plane. After the war, some planes were painted orange and
used as drones (pilot less) for target practice.
I
saw a plane like this in the model magazine below, Finescale
Modeler, and thought it would be a good project. There
is no article, really just a single picture, but that was
enough for me to come up with my own version.
It is painted testors Gloss Orange, coated with Testors
Dullcoat and then weathered. The kit is 1/48 scale. I don't
remember what brand it was.
Cockpit:
An Illustrated History of W W II Aircraft Interiors -
The aircraft designed and built during the crisis of war were
marvels of technology and ingenuity, but they were hardly
built for comfort. Nor did they offer more than a thin sheet
of aluminum and glass as protection from the hostile environment
at 30,000 feet. COCPIT details the cockpits and aircraft of
a classic period in the development and perfection of propeller-driven
aircraft and the beginning of jet aviation.
Shot
to Hell: Stories and the Photos of Ravaged WWII Warbirds
- Most of the photos in this fascinating collection have
never before been published, they are well reproduced,
and the captions are crisp and informative. Plus I could not
find one error of fact. People who read this sort of material
know that in itself is an achievement! Although this is mostly
a picture book, the accompanying text flows smoothly and provides
a good sense of the times.
Attack
of the Drones - Nowhere in the world of military technology
is the transition from science fiction to science fact more
astounding than in the dark world of autonomous aerial combat
vehicles. Before there were autonomous war machines, there
were unmanned war machines. After a brief history of unmanned
aerial vehicles, we reach the autumn of 2001. At that time,
unmanned, remotely-piloted reconnaissance aircraft were first
adapted for offensive combat operations. However, even at
that time, work was already progressing on the first generation
of combat aircraft that could both fly AND fight without crews.-

(and so far, very successful).
