Aircraft Carrier Reference Photos 1

In the 1980's and 1990's, I saw and went aboard several aircraft carriers in our local port. For security reasons, and since 911, the Navy has cut down on the public being able to come aboard their ships. But if you get a chance, these ships are well worth it.

f14 tomcats

A row of F14 Tomcats, which are much larger in real
life than you think. I was surprised that the rear wings did
not seem to be made of metal but rather some thick
composite material.

Several aircraft were set up so you can walk
around and touch at will.

One of my favorite pictures, because here from the flight deck,
you can really get a sense of how high up you are.

  • Nuclear Weapons and Aircraft Carriers : How the Bomb Saved Naval Aviation - With the advent of the atomic bomb in 1945 and its impact on strategic thinking, the future of naval aviation looked bleak. Rapid demobilization after the war eliminated many carriers, and most policy makers believed that future wars would be fought with nuclear weapons delivered by land-based aircraft. In Nuclear Weapons and Aircraft Carriers, Jerry Miller traces the struggle of respected naval leaders to promote a different vision and the innovations in the design and engineering of carriers and aircraft that resulted. He argues that the Navy's hard-won nuclear capability played a significant role in ending the Cold War.
  • Air Forces - Includes current news on all aspects of military aviation including the world's 'hotspots' and reports on the strengths of international air forces, their conflicts, weaponry and exercises. Provides insight into the latest military technology and offers a feedback section and color photography.
  • Aircraft Carriers: The World's Greatest Naval Vessels and their Aircraft Reference Book - With its emergence at the end of World War I, the aircraft carrier quickly established itself as the centerpiece of any naval flotilla. Aircraft carriers’ dominance at sea was marked by the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Since then aircraft carriers have been the yardstick by which any navy's potency is measured. Aircraft Carriers is a comprehensive guide to the carriers that have been built since the end of World War I.
  • 21st Century Warplanes: The World's Most Potent Military Aircraft - Take the controls of the most incredible warplanes in the skies today! Crawford checks you out in the extraordinary B-1 and B-2 stealth bombers, the fabulous F-16 Fighting Falcon, the furious F-15 Eagle, and the tenacious F-14 Tomcat for an information-packed review of their awesome capabilities. Details of the Tornados, Mirages, Harriers, and the new Euro fighter Typhoons that headline NATO's airborne defense network are also examined.
  • At the Controls: The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Book of Cockpits - The photographs are excellent ... This is an excellent book for anyone interested in the evolution of aircraft.
  • Lock On No. 15: F/A-18 A/C & CF-18C Hornet - his fifteenth edition of the popular LOCK ON series focuses on the details of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 A/C and CF-18C Hornet. Stunning full color photography captures the graceful lines and sophisticated details of this highly capable combat aircraft. Details highlighted include the cockpit, ejection seat, engines, landing gear, radar, avionics, armament, external stores, wing folds, in-flight refueling receptacle, and more. Each highly detailed color photograph is accompanied by a highly informative caption to guide the reader through the details. This beautiful book of this awesome aircraft belongs in the collection of every scale aircraft modeler, as well as aviation enthusiasts, and USN veterans.
  • Lady Lex and the Blue Ghost: A Pictorial History of the Uss Lexington's Cv-2 and Cv-16 - This is a pictorial history of the lady-lex. There are some great photos that I've never seen before, and the illustrations are first rate. A great buy.
