1966 Ford Altered Wheelbase Mustang Model Kit

ford mustang altered wheelbase

An AMT Blueprinter altered wheelbase 1966 mustang. I added the Tasca decals (I don't remember where I got them). It is painted with Testors metallic blue paint over a silver base.

This was a great kit. Wish I had more of them. (The picture and background are courtesy of Steve Jones.)

This kit was recently reissued by The Model King, as the Brannon Bronco Mustang kit.

I don't remember any problems while building, and for a drag racing subject (especially a Ford), it's dead on.

  • Drag Racing Funny Cars of the 1960s Photo Archive: From Super Stockers to Floppers - In the 1960s funny cars captured the fans with tremendous smoky burnouts and gigantic wheel stands, they were so unpredictable that you never knew what to expect - they might go straight or end up glancing off the guard rail. Heroes were born and idolized with their driving talents and their showmanship. Arnie "The Farmer" Beswick, "Mr. Pontiac" Jess Tyree, The "Kings of Smoke" - Farkonas, Coil and Minick's "Chi-Town Hustler," Don Schumacher, "Big John" Mazmanian, and "Jungle Jim" Liberman drew standing room only crowds each and every Saturday night under the lights!
  • Bracket Racing - If you are interested in Drag Racing, particularly Bracket Racing, this is a Great book to read. Well organized, this book is a valuable resource for the "basics" of Drag Racing as well as some more advanced issues such as various electronics used in this sport, throttle stops, line locks, etc. This book is well illustrated and logically organized.
  • Gasser Wars: Drag Racing's Street Classes: 1955-1968 - In the late 1950s, thousands of street legal hot rods participated in organized drag races across the country -- they ran in three major classes: Gas, Modified Production, and Modified Sports. As the racers got more serious, these cars were street legal in appearance only. They had headlights, taillights, and interiors, but they were full-on race cars, with huge blown Hemi engines, wide racing slicks, and raised front suspensions. Racers soon discovered that small, lightweight cars were the fastest, and the classic Gasser was born -- cars like the Stone Woods & Cook '40 Willys. Because these cars resembled street vehicles, they had a huge fan base, and their short wheelbases and wildly overpowered engines made them exciting to watch. And, as car manufacturers began sponsoring cars and touting their accomplishments in ads, the "Gasser Wars" were born. Thousands of spectators flocked to events where the top Gassers in the country would face off in grudge matches.
  • Total Performers-Ford Drag Racing in the 1960s - The 1960s was arguably the most important decade for drag racing. It had exciting cars, thrilling races, and most importantly, factory participation. Among the best high-performance cars and engines were those coming from Dearborn, Michigan. Ford Motor Company's "Total Performance Years" saw a breakthrough as drag racing helped the younger, performance- and style-conscious consumer to begin receiving some recognition. Factory participation in drag racing pushed the envelope for high performance developments. Ford's FE-series engine, Police Interceptor, GT 390, Single Overhead Cam, Cobra Jet, and Boss 429 are all covered in detail. See the cars and the drivers that made them famous - Dick Brannan's Goldfinger, Bill Lawton's Mystery Mustang, "Dyno Don" Nicholson's Eliminator Comet, Gas Ronda's stretched Mustang, Al Joenic's Batcar, and more. Accomplished journalist and life-long Ford aficionado Charles Morris takes you back to the Total Performance Years through first-hand accounts as well as over 400 rare photographs. A drag racer since 1966, Morris has run cars in both Stock and Super Stock classes. He is currently the owner of the original Norristown Ford 1963 lightweight Galaxie and races the car in Nostalgia Super Stock as part of the 422 Motorsports Drag Racing Team. This book is a must read for all drag racing fans, not just Ford enthusiasts.
