How to Build Model Cars Like a Pro

1959 Ford Edsel Model Kit

1959 edsel

I always wanted an Edsel kit. One day at a toy vendors event, I bought this one ($ 35.00 at the time, which was a bargain in the 1980's).

It was missing a rear tail lamp and the rear bumper, but it was unpainted ! I took it home, disassembled it, cleaned it all up. (Autohaus does make the taillites, though I never ordered them).

The hood does not open, and the wheels roll on metal axles. It probably was a promotional at one time. But I enjoyed having it in my collection.

It is painted in Testors Baby Blue. I used bare metal foil to chrome it up, which is a big job on an Edsel.

  • Automotive Atrocities!: The Cars We Love to Hate - Indeed, just about every car in this book is one we love to hate but most of them are, also, cars we all have joked about and the others are just pathetic or weird. I mean...who can keep a straight face while reading about Yugos, Renault Fuegos, Daihatsu Charades, Ford Mustang II King Cobras or AMC Pacers. Then there are (pathetic) Camaros with four-cylinder engines and (weird) Zil limousines.
  • Disaster in Dearborn: The Story of the Edsel - Drawing from Ford Motor Company's Design Center archives and interviews with some of Edsel's design team stylists, Bonsall chronicles the ill-fated car's history, from its first sketches in 1955 to the last 1960 models, "a marketing disaster whose magnitude has made it a household word."
  • Vintage & Historic Drag Racers - Covers cars that were in action from the 50s into the 70s.
  • Vintage Police Cars Color Series - Vintage Police Cars featuring over 80 awesome color photos of antique police cars from the 40s through the 70s.
  • Vintage Car Wrecks: Motoring Mishaps 1950-1979 - this volume chronicles wrecks of the1950s, 60s, and 70s automobiles. More than 400 post accident images are accompanied by detailed captions providing relevant model and technical information.
