Mercury Custom Model Kit

| |
An
AMT 1949 - 1950 Mercury
kit. This kit has a lot of extra stuff, mostly custom parts,
some of which I used here. The front bumper is flipped upside
down, I liked it better that way visually.
The
skirts came with the kit. I am not sure about the white walls,
tires, and rims, I may have added them from another kit or
the parts box.
This kit also included two engines, one of them being a Chrysler
413, the other a "stock" Ford Flathead V8.
The
paint is a hardware store color. Which at the time, I really
liked, I think I did several 50's cars in this unusual purple
color.
This
is one of those kits that has been around forever, and includes
a lot of extra parts you don't see in modern tooling for model
kits. For this build, I used some of them, but the overall
body is stock.
Below
is a real Mercury that has been customized quite a bit.

- Barris:
Kustoms of the 1950s - George Barris' work set a trend for
all custom car builders and owners. George
has done a great tribute to many car builders by showing these
terrific photos of many cars that we all thought were lost.
As one reads thru the book, you begin to realize that these rolling
sculptures are true works of art, and several of these vehicles
have been featured in museums and art shows. One can thank George
for having the ability to photograph these custom cars during
the 1950s.
- American
Custom Car - Among the hardest core of automotive enthusiasts,
there has always existed a desire to press automotive styling
and performance a step further than the showroom floor. This photographic
and cultural history of the American custom car examines the
evolution of this phenomenon from the 1930s to present, covering
touchstone trends, influential builders (Barris,
Roth, Coddington, et al.),
significant auto shows, vital enthusiast magazines and regional
variations in styling.
- Custom
Car Modeling - Guides the beginner into the most creative—and
most demanding—branch of the hobby! Begin with an ordinary
kit and build the custom car of your dreams! Learn how, step by
step, with tips and techniques from one of the hobby's leading
modelers. Covers all the basics of modeling with strong emphasis
on bodywork and painting. Highly photographic presentation
with photos of each step Designed for any skill level Premier
book from a well-known author and modeler, Mark Gustavson.
- Custom
Cars of the 1950s - This is a great book that really captures
the custom car scene of The Fifties. Andy was there and knew all
these people and even worked on many of these cars. He was once
an editor of Rod
and Custom Magazine and a long time contributor the the rod
magazines of the period. If you read these magazines during this
time, you will recognize many of these cars. The photography
is great with clear crisp pictures that are well chosen to
show how it was back then when a guy built a car and drove it,
although there are photos of some of the early shows and the great
show cars of the time. These are not your usual studio photographs,
but actual pictures taken at the time these cars were on the street.
The cars are shown in the body shop, on the street, at the service
station etc. The captions are detailed and tell about not only
the cars, but the owners, the builders and Andy's memory of each
car.
