For
about 10 years I have wanted to build a model of a 4 wheel
drive woody that a surfer would use to go surfing.
I have never seen one. This idea just came into my mind
one day when I was at the beach in California watching the surfers.
Here is a mock up of what I am building.
I
am using the 1948 Ford Woody because of the great detail in
this kit. I used the best 4X4 running gear I could find
in my closet. The running gear comes from the 1984 GMC
pickup. I used the 48 woody frame.
I hacked
away portions of the frame and glued on plastic where the
GMC running gear would need to be mounted. The wheels
and tires came from the Aoshima Terrano High Rider Kit.
(
The wheels and tires from the GMC kit looked too big
to me. )
I also
used the V8 engine from the GMC kit. Imagine that a
Ford with a Chevy V8..!!!!!
Time
for a little body work. I opened up the front vent.
More
body work. To add a little detail I opened up the gas
cap. I scratch built the gas cap. I'm going to
add the gas cap hinge but no gas cap. I want to make
it look as if the gas cap is long gone.
Remember
this woody is almost 60 years old and it is owned by a surfer
who probably makes less than $ 30,000 per year. That
is if he even HAS a job......
I
thought this would be a good point to add wood grain to the
body. The outside panels already have raised wood grain.
But the outside boards were smooth plastic, so I scratched
all of the boards with a scribe.
I made
sure that the scratches went in the direction that the real
wood grain would go. This job was long and painful.
My hands cramped up a few times. Later when this plastic
is painted and dry brushed it will look like real weathered
wood......
