Fort
Lauderdale / Miami International Airport - If you fly
directly to Lauderdale on a commercial flight, this is where
you will be. The airport has a long history. Some aircraft
enthusiasts will remember this as the airport from which
the famous Flight
19 had flown from in WWII.
I
remember as a kid, we had friends who actually lived on
the southwest portion of the airport. Nearby was a wooded
area with a burned out passenger plane the fire dept has
used to train firefighting on. With expansion over the years,
these houses are gone, but close by there is our Humane
Society Animal Shelter, if you move here and our looking
for a pet.
Fort
Lauderdale Executive Airport - This airport caters to
smaller aircraft, though I have seen prop cargo planes and
larger private jest there also. Usually when the Commemorative
Air force visits , this is the airport they attend /
fly out of (and I have seen larger B17s
and B29s there). Next to the airport is the Fort
Lauderdale Stadium (the home of Spring Training for
the Baltimore
Orioles major league baseball team), where they have
all kinds of events, from monster truck pulls to large Church
services.
At
the beginning the airport was called West Prospect Satellite
Field, the Airport was constructed in 1941 to train Naval
Aviators, such as future President George Bush, who as an
Airman trained for combat during World War II. The federal
government deeded the facility to the City in 1947 for use
as a public airport.
This
airport is also used by various organizations for flight
training, and there have been several minor crashes and
landings outside the airport property over the years.
This
airport is also where the BSO
(Broward's Sheriff's Office) keeps one of their Rescue helicopters.
