Resin Figure Models of Classic Mythology

While resin figures are nothing new, the material and technology has come a long way over the last couple of decades. In the 1990s when resin figures really took off, the market was quite heavy with figure kits. Companies like Aurora, who did a lot of figures in plastic, was gone. There was a big hole to fill for model builders who wanted to build and paint larger figure models.

Back then, magazines like Kit Builder and Amazing Figure Model had filled a niche market, and were eager to share the possibilities with figure models. While some plastic models have been reissued, and even some new ones came to the hobby shelves, the resin market is still quite large and full of fans. The figures are made in low quantities, low production runs, and you won't find them in hobby stores. Most of them have to be ordered online. Some kits from the 1990s can bring big dollars because they are so rare. Most kits tend to lean towards Pinups, Horror, and Science Fiction themed subjects. Military figures still make up a larger portion too. But the kits can still be hard to come across. It takes a special kind of modeler who can assemble a vinyl or resin figure model, and then has the talent to paint the model to make it life like. I envy those builders. I wish I had that kind of talent.

With modern resins, you get a very smooth surface and much better castings than ever before. Some new ones are classic "statues", which are molded in white. They are usually classic figures, such as from Roman Mythology. The typical gods, of Mars, Athena, Hercules, Zeus. You get the idea. Some reflect statues and artork, such as retro or art-deco styles. Some are fantasy figures, from women to goblins and elves. It's a wide open market.

Here are just a few of these great resin figures that can be painted:

Below is one I have that I started on. This is Aphrodite. While the heights can vary, depending on the figure model, I have a typical spray can next to her so you can see just how large it is. I shot the figure with white primer, and then hand painted the skin tone with Vallejo paint. I haven't decided on how to paint the clothing yet. I also need to add shading and tones to her skin. As you can see, if you are a figure model, you have virtualy an empty pallet to make the figure really pop and stand out. This figure didn't need any assembly, so it's basically just a painters project. Though you could modify it (I was thinking of removing the doves, replacing them with bats, painting her red and making a COOP style she-devil out of her .... maybe next time).

The thing is, these resin statues can be quite the fun project. You may want to try a couple of them out. You'll probably be the only one at a model contest with such a model.

Moebius Models Krypto Dog Kit - Superman

This is a neat little kit by Moebius Models. Featuring Krypto - Superman's pal from the comic books. As you may already know, Krypto guards the Fortress of Solitude while Superman's off doing his super hero thing.

The kit only has two parts, one for the body and one for the head. And a red cape of course. The box says he's 5 inches tall, and that's with the head popped on. But it's still a very good likeness, with great surface detail. Yes', it's a vinyl kit. But don't let that stop you. If you never built a vinyl model before, this would be a good kit to use as your first build of one. It's molded in white. The red cape is REAL CLOTH, with the family crest (silk screened?) on it in gold. If you don't paint the kit you can have it together in a minute. Otherwise, you can primer the figure, paint it white, and use some red and gold for the collar (and black for the eyes).

If you're a dog lover, you'll enjoy this kit. Of course, he could be any dog of any color, depending on how you paint him. If he looks like your Black Lab - paint him black!

Round 2 Polar Lights Superman DC Comics Model Kit

Round 2 Polar Lights Superman DC Comics Model Kit

Round 2 - Polar Lights has quickly produced an all new 1/8 scale injection molding of a Superman figure model kit.

This new model is an easy to assemble snap kit. It is also molded in blue, which will be great for kids, though they would still need to paint the red and other colors. Adult modelers will probably prime the whole model prior to painting anyway. The model pose and box art are based on the iconic "Kryptonite Nevermore" comic book cover featuring Superman flexing his muscle to break free of Kryptonite chains. The kit includes both stickers and decals of Superman's "S" symbol on his chest. The model stands on an "S" symbol base to fully support the figure for display.

A plastic Superman model is long overdue, and I'm glad Round 2 stepped up to the plate with this great offering. This will make a good companion kit to the older Monogram / Revell Superman kit of old.

Moebius Models Ironman II SHEILD Black Widow Figure Model Kit

When the Ironman 2 movie came out, there were a few screen extras, including SHEILD operative the Black Widow Natasha Romanoff (protrayed by the beautiful actress Scarlett Johansson).

Moebius has been quick to produce a great kit of the Black Widow character to go along with their Ironman series of models. I recommend you order one soon, it's hard to say how long these will last. It looks to be a hit !

Round 2 MPC Models Dark Shadows Barnabas Collins Figure Gothic Horror Model Kit

Round 2 MPC Models has released it's new Dark Shadows Barnabas Collins Model Figure Kit.

What makes the TV Series Dark Shadows so unique was that is was a horror gothic "daytime soap opera" type show, shot live on a daily basis. They were using low budget stage effects and storyline to carry the show, instead of relying on expensive FX. There really has never been a show like it since is was produced in 1966, and it ran for almost 5 years. You can see some scenes online at Youtube. (I remember watching the show as a kid myself).

Back from the Dead! After being out of production for over 40 years, MPC is proud to bring back the gothic star of Dark Shadows, Barnabas Collins. The vampire, doomed to a loveless eternity, is presented just as it originally was with optional glow in the dark parts and soft, semi-poseable arms. The kit features optional detailed bats and rats to supply a ghoulish setting.

The model Scale is 1/8, making it around 8.5" tall once assembled. The figure is molded in black and includes optional glow-in-the-dark parts. More about this great kit can be read here.

Pegasus Hobbies The Relic "Kothoga Creature" Model Kit

Pegasus Hobbies has released it's new plastic 1/12 The Relic "Kothoga Creature" Model Kit.

Unleashed from the horror movie "The RELIC" comes the frightening "Kothoga" creature model kit! With its powerful tail, menacing claws and huge mandible pinchers, it takes its place as one of the scariest movie monster designs ever produced by the legendary Stan Winston Studios. Comes with museum style display base and detailed tribal idol statue.

(In the movie) Plucky evolutionary biologist Dr. Margo Green (Penelope Ann Miller) joins forces with tough Chicago cop Lt. Vincent D'Agosta (Tom Sizemore) to unravel the mystery behind the horribly mangled corpses that keep popping up around her museum during an opening night gala for a new exhibit. When they investigate further, they find that there were mysterious deaths on the cargo ship that brought it across the ocean. Sure enough, there's a monster to blame, sprung from a strange artifact of South American origin. Based on the best seller by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.

Natalya Melnik Painting Model Figures DVD

If you like painting figures, take a look at this new DVD, Miniature Painting Secrets with Natalya.

There you will see a small video clip there, which looks quite interesting. While her style seems to apply to fantasy figures, I can see how how her work is considered some of the best. I like the way she uses shadow and highlights, of different colors and shades. As with all model tips and tricks, they can be applied to many different kinds of model building.

This really makes me want to get a few figures and try it out myself.

Atlantis Models Releases Zorro and the White Stallion Figure Kits

The Mark of Zorro and the White Stallion ride again !

It's great to see these kits released again by Atlantis Models. I have an original (built) Aurora White Stallion kit, with the box, but in addition to getting this new offering, I now have the Zorro kit as well. The Aurora box was more square, the new boxes are rectanguler, and nitpickers may object to that, but I am just glad we now have these wonderful kits to build.

Horse kits are rare, so even if you don't care that much for Zorro, you can still build two great horse kits for your collection. Personally, I think the box art is cool. I believe these will appeal to kids of all ages, as well as boys and girls.

Revell Creature from the Black Lagoon Figure Model Kit

Revell has reissued it's kit for the Creature of the Black Lagoon.

This builds into a very good model display, which includes a swamp creature on a rock by it's foot, a base, and some kind of branches. There are seams to deal with, but with some patience, they can be filled easily. I built one of these years ago. While painting it, I used a dark green base, and dry brushed a gold color paint over it to accent the highlights. I think it worked out well. The original movie was in black and white, so the correct color is pretty much up to you and your imagination. The production staff probably used colors on the suit to look good on camera, rather than actually worrying about what might look realistic in normal color daylight.

This figure kit adds a great addition to your Universal Pictures monsters collection.

There are actually two actors who played the creature, one being Ricou Browning, who did the underwater work. I met him years ago, he's a nice fellow, and always eager to talk about his work.

Geometric Designs Mr. Hyde Scale Model Figure Kit

There was a time in the 1990's when monster / horror kits were everywhere, cast in resin or made in vinyl. You can still find them today, but I believe that was a peak time for sales, and many small shops / companies folded, with molds and products never to be seen again. (despite some re-casters).

One strong company then, and still going strong now, is Geometric Designs. They continue to release new products, and their name is known as one of the premiere companies producing monster and horror kits.

New for Geometric is their Mr. Hyde figure. It is 1:12 scale (around 8 inches high) and includes a base. There is a lot of detail, especially in the face and clothing. I can see a modeler reconstructing the street lamp and making it light up, to give an eery glow on the scene.

One product they also make, and these are fun for model car builders, are their 1:25 scale monsters. Very unique !

Moebius Green Goblin and Spiderman Figure Model Kits

Moebius Models has released their Green Goblin and Spiderman 1:8 scale kits. Spiderman has been done in plastic before, by Aurora in the 1970's, and again recently by Polar Lights. But this Moebius kit includes a new pose and a great base to mount him on.

The Spiderman base interlocks with another included base from the Green Goblin kit, so it makes a pretty cool diorama by itself or together. Horizon did a Green Goblin vinyl kit in the 1990's, but this new one, in a more familiar styrene plastic, is a welcome addition to my growing super hero model collection.
