B-17F
Memphis Belle US Army Air Force Bomber
During World War II, the Boeing B,17 was the best, known heavily
armed strategic bomber, although with a total build of 12,677
it was far from the most numerous plane of its type. It kept the
name "Flying Fortress" that it received from an American
journalist at the time of its first flight. The Boeing B,17F was
the first mass, produced Flying Fortress. The most famous plane
of this series was the B,17F,10,BO made by Boeing which on 15th
July 1942 was delivered to and put into service with 324 Bomber
Squadron, 91 Bomber Group at Bassingbourn, England. The crew gave
it the nickname "Memphis Belle" after the lady, friend
of the pilot Lt. Robert K. Morgan. Its fame resulted from the
fact that it was officially the first US Army Air Force bomber
in Europe to survive 25 missions and it was made the star of a
Hollywood government film. Model details: Structural details on

B-17
Flying Fortress in Action - The B-17 Flying Fortress dropped
more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II and
is arguably the iconic bomber of that epic conflict. This
80-page, perfect bound volume, packed with 200 period photographs,
delivers a visual overview of the development and use of the
legendary four-engine warplane. During the 10 years in which
it was produced, a total of 12,731 of the B-17 heavy bombers
rolled off the assembly lines of Boeing, Douglas Aircraft,
and Lockheed s subsidiary Vega. First flown in 1935, the aircraft
was repeatedly modified, upgraded, and perfected in response
to experience gained in the European conflict. While the gross
weight of the developmental Y1B-17 was 34,873 lbs, the final
model of the aircraft, the B-17G, had a gross weight nearly
double that, of 65,500 lbs a testimony to the innovations
incorporated in the Fortress. In addition to the steady technical
advance of the B-17, this volume also highlights the roles
played by individual aircraft and their crews, such as the
Memphis Belle, which completed 25 missions over enemy territory
and starred in a wartime Hollywood documentary, and the Stage
Door Canteen, whose christening by Winston Churchill s daughter
attracted such cinema greats as Edward G. Robinson and Vivien
Leigh. Photos of the All American, which returned safely to
base despite having its tail nearly sheared off by a Messerschmitt,
serve as a reminder of the incredible toughness of the Flying
Fortress and the uncommon skill of its crewmen. At a time
of unprecedented trial, Americans of the greatest generation
stood together behind their armed forces. Vivid testimony
to this unity of purpose of free individuals are the historic
color pictures of the 5 Grand Boeing s 5,000th B-17 which
flew into battle covered in the signatures of the hundreds
of individual men and women who designed and built her. An
unmatched, lavishly illustrated account of one of the greatest
warplanes of all time, The B-17 Flying Fortress in Action
is a must have! Perfect binding. Illustrated with 200 vintage
photographs, plus color profiles and detailed line drawings;
80 pages.
BOEING
B-17 FORTRESS IN RAF COASTAL COMMAND SERVICE - Rejected
as a bomber by the RAF, the B-17 was used extensively as a
long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft by Coastal Command.
This book tells the fascinating story of these operations,
a vital but often overlooked part of the fight against the
U-Boats. All the aircraft involved are listed, and the tedious
but essential work of their crews described, including some
epic encounters with enemy submarines. Fully illustrated
with many wartime photos, and scale plans of the airframe
modifications. Full color profiles of representative aircraft.
Final
Cut: The Post War B-17 Flying Fortress: The Survivors: Revised

famous B-17 in post-war services, and delivers the complete
history of each of the surviving 43 Flying Fortresses left
today. Chapters chronicle the B-17's military use in tests
and transport, and civil use in films, as air tankers, and

and photographs, plus eight detailed appendices. Completely
revised and updated with new information and photos.
SWEDISH
FORTRESS: The Boeing F-17 Fortress in Civil and Military Service
- Many USAAF aircraft landed in neutral Sweden during World
War II. The Swedish authorities arranged to buy many of these
from the US, to supplement their limited and aging aircraft
stocks. The B-17 Flying Fortress was selected for conversion
to an airliner, and Saab undertook the work. This book tells,
for the first time in English, the story of these aircraft
and their subsequent careers, in Sweden, Denmark and France.
No other B-17s were ever used as airliners, so this is a unique
addition to the well-known history of the Fortress. Illustrated
with many photos, both contemporary and of surviving airframes,
and with color profiles of the color schemes carried by these
aircraft. Detailed plans of the modified airframes are included.
Aircraft
