of contemporary references adds great authority to the
work. Besides the fine technological details and engineering
drawings, the book goes into the details of how the
mating of certain engines with certain airframes resulted
in aircraft with a certain look or performance (or, sometimes,
under performance).

nose art of all time.
- Air
Force One: The Aircraft that Shaped the Modern Presidency
- This compelling history of presidential air transportation
begins with the first president to fly (and to fly abroad,
and to have a special plane): FDR. Eisenhower and Truman
both had dedicated prop planes, but JFK took the leap
into the jet age with the 707 that had the grimmest task
of any Air Force One-bringing his body home from Dallas.
Other Air Force Ones have had less well-known dramas:
Lyndon Johnson's impromptu around-the-world flight in
1967, Richard Nixon's last departure from Washington and
Bush's escorted, circuitous route home after 9/11. But
mostly the 707s and their successors the 747s have made
the president accessible to the world and vice versa,
without having to be out of touch with his responsibilities
or reducing his security. The price of this is imposing;
a double-page spread shows the logistics of a major presidential
journey abroad.
- Air
& Space - This magazine's editorial emphasis celebrates
the human fascination with and increasing dependence on
the sky. It explores the ways flight continues to change
the world and features the people, places, issues and
innovations of the air age. Reports and feature articles

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in the
evolution of aircraft.
- At
the Edge of Space: The X-15 Flight Program - Initiated
in the 1950s, the X-15 program tested a unique
rocket-powered aircraft at supersonic speeds in the atmosphere's
outer limits. The stubby-winged, needle-nosed craft achieved
speeds of 4000 mph, could fly at altitudes of well over
200,000 feet and yielded data crucial to NASA's space
missions. Thomson, one of the test pilots, traces the
technical developments of the program, emphasizing the
viewpoint of the men who (barely) controlled the unpredictable
plane in the air. He demonstrates through a series of
vivid anecdotes the effect of g forces, extreme vertigo
and other mental and physical problems associated with
supersonic flight.
- Aviation
History - AVIATION HISTORY covers the history of aviation--civil
and military--from the earliest attempts to today's Mach
5 jets. Each issue includes photos, paintings,
and articles.

Blackbird Declassified - Perhaps the most remarkable
chapter in the story of the supersonic SR-71
Blackbird spy plane is that of its predecessor, the
A-12 Blackbird, an aircraft capable of speeds in excess
of 2,000 miles per hour and an altitude of 15 miles. Long
cloaked in secrecy, that tale comes to life in the pages
of this history.
- Biplanes,
Triplanes and Seaplanes - Biplanes and seaplanes dominated
early aviation. The flying surfaces on biplanes added
strength to the structure and provided extra lift to compensate
for comparatively small engines, while seaplanes were
favored for the unlimited space water provided for long
take-off runs. This is an extensive guide to more than
120 biplanes, triplanes, and seaplanes, from early designs
such as the Wright Flyer to jet flying boats and timeless
classics like the Tiger Moth and the Curtiss
JN-4 "Jenny." 600 color and archival
black-and-white photographs are featured in this extraordinary
book.

Kosovo and most recently in Afghanistan. Bill Sweetman
is an internationally acclaimed expert and credited by
Tom Clancy as being "a Genius."
- B24
Liberator Combat Legend - The most prolific American
aircraft built during World War II, the B-24 Liberator
was flown in more theaters of war by more air forces than
any other four-engine bomber. Winston Churchill used a
single-fin Liberator named "Commando" when traveling
to conferences with the Allies around the world.
- Bomber
Legends - Bomber Legends.
- British
Secret Projects: Fighters & Bombers 1935-1950
- This new volume again emphasizes the designs that were

- World's
Strangest Aircraft: A Collection of Weird and Wonderful
Flying Machines - Topics include gigantism in passenger
planes, the quest for speed in racers, WWII experimental
planes (some incredibly ahead of their time), lifting-bodies,
the X-planes, tilt-rotors, VTOLs, jet flying boats, and
planes built for oversize cargo. A fun read with great
photographs not found in most aircraft histories.
- XB-70
Valkyrie: The Ride to Valhalla - This complete story
of the XB-70 follows the Mach 3 long-range, high-altitude
bomber from its conception at the height of the Cold War
through its abandonment after 15 years of development, explaining
and illustrating the innovative technologies and materials
that resulted from the project and how they paved the
way for aircraft like the B-1 and F-117. Also described
are the backroom politics surrounding the aircraft and
the crash that killed the crew of one prototype. The lone
surviving XB-70 is the centerpiece of the U.S. Air Force
Museum in Dayton, Ohio.
- X-Planes:
Pushing the Envelope of Flight - Since the first edition
of X-Planes at Edwards was published in 1995, many new
types of civilian (Rutan-types, 717 and 777), military
(Bombers, Fighters, Reconnaissance Drones and Transports)
and dedicated research aircraft (X-planes) have been created
by numerous manufacturers and then flight-tested at the
Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) and NASA Dryden Flight
Research Center (DFRC) at Edwards Air Force Base in the
Mojave Desert of California. A number of these flight-test
programs have concluded but a number of them are ongoing.
These include: Boeing North American B-1B Lancer'; Northrop
Grumman B-2A Spirit; Boeing C-17A Globemaster III; Boeing
F-15E Strike Eagle; Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22A Raptor;
Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Prototypes - Boeing X-32 and
Lockheed Martin X-35; Lockheed/Boeing/General Dynamics
YF-22A Lightning II; Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF-23A
Gray Ghost; Boeing 717; Boeing 777; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
(UAV) - RQ-1 through RQ-8; Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles
(UCAV) - Boeing X-45A and Northrop Grumman X-47A Pegasus;
X-planes, X-32 through X-49.

Photo Scrapbook - The planes and many more are here.
Note the title says this is a Photo Scrapbook. It is.
There are 450 black and white photographs and 50 color
prints. Along with the pictures is a bit of commentary
explaining what they were trying to do, what happened,
perhaps what happened to the plane after the testing was
completed. Down through the years a lot of rather funny
looking planes have been built for one purpose or another,
And it's great to see so many unusual planes pictured
in one place.
